Songs About Waiting for Love

You might have a very clear picture of who you want that special person to be. Or you may have no idea what to expect and are just waiting to be surprised. Either way, waiting for love involves a kaleidoscope of emotions: longing, frustration, anticipation, faith, excitement, loneliness, hope, even despair. So while you’re wishing and wondering, here’s a playlist of songs for the waiting heart.

1. Someone’s Waiting For You – Sammy Fain

This song from the Disney classic The Rescuers was sung for a little girl who was beginning to lose faith. I think the simple sweetness and innocence of it is the perfect balm for those moments of flagging hope, even for grown ups.

2. I Promise – Jaci Velasquez

This song is more than just a promise to wait for the right person, it’s also an expression of faith that he will come in the perfect time.

3. Wait for Me – Rebecca St. James

While waiting for that special someone, there’s a danger of overly idealizing him or her until there’s no room for flaws. I love the part where she sings “Now I know you may have made mistakes, but there’s forgiveness and a second chance.”

4. Waiting – Matt Wertz

He’s just trying to figure out this growing up thing, and he thinks having someone to stand by his side will help. Isn’t that something we’ve all felt at one time or another?

5. Counting to 100 – Matt Wertz

Another one from Matt Wertz, where he sings of waiting as a game of hide-and-seek. So he’ll count to 100, and maybe when he starts seeking he’ll find her. It’s impossible for me to listen to this without singing along.

6.  Between Us – Peter Bradley Adams

He starts by asking, “Hey stranger, when may I call you my own?” and promises that he’s willing to disregard everything and everyone that has come  between them. The song echoes with loneliness as he tells the unknown someone that he’ll cross any distance to get to her.

7. Love is Waiting – Brooke Fraser

I love Brooke Fraser’s lyrics. This song is about savoring the wait, slowing the pace, as they make sure they’re ready for each other. “I could write a million songs about the way you say my name, I could live a lifetime with you and then do it all again. And like I can’t force the sun to rise or hasten summer’s start, neither should I rush my way into your heart.” Yeah.

8. Haven’t Met You Yet – Michael Bublé

I smile every time I hear this; it’s just so darn sweet and hopeful and cute! He knows he has a lot of love to give, and he’s not giving up until he meets the right person to receive it. With lyrics like “I guess it’s half timing, and the other half’s luck. Wherever you are, whenever it’s right, you’ll come out of nowhere and into my life,” this seems like the perfect song to end this list. (BONUS CUTENESS: He’s now married to the girl in the video. I dare you to watch it and not melt.)

So what songs in your playlist are about waiting? Comments and recommendations welcome!

NOTE: Kate Bradshaw’s Someday also belongs in this list, but I can’t find a video of it anywhere. Judging by the comments on the lyrics post, it’s rather elusive.

TOP 10 SENTIMENTAL SONGS

Sure, there are millions of songs about love already. Nevertheless, some composers manage to come up with lyrics that are fresh and genuine and real. Here are ten of the best I’ve ever heard. (UPDATE: Okay, this is a really old list, but I decided not to change it.  I just added the videos and linked to the full lyrics in the titles so you won’t have to search anymore. Enjoy!)

1. DECIPHERING ME (Brooke Fraser)

Friend, it’s getting late, we should be going. We’ve sat here beneath these flickering neons for hours. While I am cracking their code, you are deciphering me – for I am a mystery; I am a locked room in a tall tower.

2.  LOVE IS WAITING (Brooke Fraser)

I could write a million songs about the way you say my name; I could live a lifetime with you and then do it all again. And like I can’t force the sun to rise or hasten summer’s start, neither should I rush my way into your heart.

3. THE THIEF (Brooke Fraser)

You’re ruining me with secrets and gestures and looks, with sonnets from second-hand books, playing the chords in me nobody knew how to play. You sing me to sleep, talk down my walls, look through my windows as I wait. You could be the thief I give the key to.

4. THESE DAYS (Chantal Kreviazuk)

Make me a storybook and write me away from here. I need a different now – where we can wear each other for a while and I’ll lend you my tears if I could borrow your smile.

5. THE FEAR YOU WON’T FALL (Joshua Radin)

I know you’re scared that I’ll soon be over it – that’s part of it all. Part of the beauty of falling in love with you is the fear you won’t fall.

6. SORRY TO A FRIEND (Edwin McCain)

Staring at her face, I see a past that still haunts me. The road where we split up is paved with the things I didn’t say.

7. COME AWAY WITH ME (Norah Jones)

I want to walk with you on a cloudy day in fields where the yellow grass grows knee-high. So won’t you try to come?

8. SONG FOR A DANCER (Stephen Speaks)

She dances; her footsteps like raindrops patter across the stage. Second glances – she pirouettes then slowly fades away. Lost my chances – who holds the broom that will sweep her off her feet?

9. PAPERWEIGHT (Joshua Radin and Schuyler Fisk)

Every word you say I think I should write down, don’t wanna forget come daylight.

10. SO ROMANTIC (Stacey Kent)

It was so like you to choose such a moment: the sun setting over the square, a pavement café, the local children at play, the sound of an accordion somewhere. You suddenly said fate was pulling us apart, then you shrugged like there was nothing more to add. I suppose you considered that so romantic – well, I just considered it sad.

So what’s on your Top Ten? Also, you might wanna check out this other playlist of songs about waiting, if you’re in the mood for more romance. 🙂

Psalm 139

by Rebecca St. James

You search me
You know me
You see my every move
There’s nothing I could ever do
To hide myself from You
You know my thoughts
My fears and hurts
My weaknesses and pride
You know what I am going through
And how I feel inside

But even though You know
You will always love me
Even though You know
You’ll never let me go
I don’t deserve Your love
But you give it freely
You will always love me
Even though You know

Epiphany in a Song*

What’s this life, anyway, what’s it to you and me

What’s it to anyone; who are we supposed to be?

Make me a storybook and write me away from here

I need a different now…

When you’re very young, you think that you know exactly what you want to be when you grow up. There are all these plans, these dreams, and the boundless optimism that they will all come true, that you will get to the place where you really want to be. But twenty or so years later, you realize that all the answers you thought you knew have faded like the images from a dream when you finally wake up. The maps you have carefully charted are suddenly outdated, impractical. Or maybe it is the optimism that was lost.

…Where we can wear each other for a while

And I’ll lend you my tears if I could borrow your smile

And we’ll get through tomorrow some other day

Happy after once upon these days…

Then it seems as if the horizon is forever out of your reach, and you begin to wonder if perhaps you should aim for another destination, an easier journey. But you can’t give up those old dreams just yet, so you linger on the path, maybe stop for a while and take notice of your surroundings, and of see how far you’ve already come. As you rest, there’s a temptation to go back to familiar lands, to the fields you’ve always known. But no matter how much you wish you could, you know that you can never truly return – you have gone too far and seen too much for those lands to feel like home again. So you wait some more, with another traveler perhaps, hoping for a renewal of strength for the road ahead.

…There are four roads to anywhere, four ways to everything

We were unbreakable; we spoke of destiny

Let’s take a moment out, and go where we never go

Let’s make a new world now…

After a while you begin to wonder if maybe you should try another course, different from the one you planned before you set out. True, this road may turn out to be more difficult, and you don’t have the maps, but it leads to the same destination. So now you have two choices: to stay on the path you know and try to muster up the enthusiasm, or to dare the unknown and embark on an adventure. Then you realize that maybe there is something to be said for having no undisputable directions, because then you can search for the way yourself; and the journey will be all the more precious to you.

…Then one day we’ll find when we’re looking back at this time

Wondering how we’ve come so far from this

And then we’ll close our eyes….

I’ll take a better world, I’ll take anything

I’ll take our little  world now….**

*This is for both of us, Legolas. =)

** lyrics from Chantal Kreviazuk’s song These Days

Praise You in This Storm

by Casting Crowns

I was sure by now, God,
You would have reached down and wiped our tears away
Stepped in and saved the day
But once again, I say “Amen”, and it’s still raining…

And as the thunder rolls,
I barely hear Your whisper through the rain
“I’m with you…”
And as Your mercy falls,
I’ll raise my hands and praise the God who gives
And takes away

And I’ll praise you in this storm and I’ll lift my hands
For You are who You are, no matter where I am
Every tear I’ve cried, You hold in Your hand
You never left my side, and though my heart is torn
I’ll praise You in this storm

I remember when I stumbled in the wind
You heard my cry to You and raised me up again
My strength is almost gone, how can I carry on
If I can’t find You..?

I lift my eyes unto the hills, where does my help come from?
My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.
I lift my eyes unto the hills, where does my help come from?
My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.

And though my heart is torn, I’ll praise You in this storm….

Love Will Find You

by Jaci Velasquez

A blue moon
Is the only light that falls upon your room —
Your cold room
Too soon,
There’ll be another empty morning in your life
But you’ll try again.
Though the sun
Is the only light that shines within your heart
Your cold heart…

Oh, how your dreams have been forsaken,
And now it seems your hope’s mistaken;
But when you’re sure your world is breaking,

Love will find you
And it will heal a heart that’s grieving
Love will find you
You gotta see
You gotta see
Love will find you
When you believe you’d stopped believing
Love will find you

Bright lights
From the streets that wind away across the night
Oh the endless night
You might
Go on searching in the shadows waiting there
Already where you run
Like a lost and lonely ghost upon the wind
And cry again
Hoping to lose the pain you’re holding
Walk through a door that’s always open
Into a promise never broken!

Love will find you
Oh, someday you’ll mend the fear
Oh, you must believe
You must believe…

Someday

by Kate Bradshaw

I’ve never seen his face, I’ve never heard his voice
But I know he’s out there waiting for me
I’ve never felt his touch or tasted his kiss
But my heart will know the moment we meet

Might be tomorrow, might be today
I don’t know the time, I don’t know the place

Someday, somewhere
Someone will be there
To love me and share
The rest of my life
Won’t look behind me
Let destiny guide me
I know that he’ll find me
Someday, somewhere

I’ve seen all the looks, I’ve heard all the lines
I know what most guys are about
I’ll know the truth when I look in his eyes
And I know there won’t be any doubt

I’m not in a hurry, there’s lots of time
But I keep his picture in the back of my mind

Someday, somewhere
Someone will be there
To love me and share
The rest of my life
Won’t look behind me
Let destiny guide me
I know that he’ll find me
Someday, somewhere

NOTE FROM EVENSTARWEN: I really wish I could help out those who are asking for the song, but I don’t have it anymore. If anybody knows where to download/buy it, please comment. Thank you, and thanks for reading!

When You Walked Into My Life

by Jaci Velasquez

I’ve waited all this time
Counting minutes as they pass
Searching for a sign
Wishing for the best

And just when my hopes were wearing thin
You turned my heart to love again
Like a miracle out of the blue
You rescued me like the angels do
You shook the heavens and cracked the sky
When you walked… when you walked into my life

When you appeared
Like sight to the blind
Like music to my ears
Like a reason to a rhyme

And just when I thought my chance was gone
Love came to me with open arms
You spoke my name and the world began again
You touched my heart and it opened
Like a miracle out of the blue
You rescued me like the angels do
You shook the heavens and cracked the sky
When you walked… when you walked into my life.

To the one I will love forever…

Darling, did you know that I, I dream about you?
Waiting for the look in your eyes
When we meet for the first time
And darling, did you know that I, I pray about you
Praying that you will hold on
Keep your loving arms only for me

Because I am waiting for,
Praying for you, darling
Wait for me, too
Wait for me as I wait for you
Darling, wait

Darling, did you know I dream about life together
Knowing you will be forever
I’ll be yours and you’ll be mine
And darling, when I say, “’til death do us part”
I’ll mean it with all of my heart
Now and always, faithful to you

Now I know you may have made mistakes
But there’s forgiveness
And a second chance
So wait for me
Darling, wait for me

Wait for me
Wait for me
Wait for Me

Somewhere Out There

Somewhere out there beneath the pale moonlight

Someone’s thinking of me and loving me tonight

Somewhere out there someone’s saying a prayer

That we’ll find one another in that big somewhere out there

And even though I know how very far apart we are

It helps to think we might be wishing on the same bright star

And when the night wind starts to sing a lonesome lullaby

It helps to think we’re sleeping underneath the same big sky

Somewhere out there if love can see us through

Then we’ll be together somewhere out there

Out where dreams come true

And even though I know how very far apart we are

It helps to think we might be wishing on the same bright star

And when the night wind starts to sing a lonesome lullaby

It helps to think we’re sleeping underneath the same big sky

Somewhere out there if love can see us through

Then we’ll be together somewhere out there

Out where dreams come true.
