BEFORE SUNRISE (love story)

This is definitely one of the most romantic movies I’ve seen. The whole story happens in one night, when two strangers, a young American guy and a beautiful French girl who meet on a train, impulsively decide to spend the next few hours exploring Vienna together. It’s brilliant, refreshing and absolutely believable; and the chemistry between Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy is so magical, so natural, that you almost feel like you’re eavesdropping on the intimate conversation of two actual people. Their interaction is so rich—the awkwardness of two people just getting to know each other, the fascination between strangers who suddenly feel this rare connection, the celebration of youth, the magic of an evening in Vienna—all these elements blended together to give us a genuine portrayal of life and youth and love. It’s difficult to choose one favorite moment, but if pressed, I would say that I love this line delivered with absolute perfection by Julie Delpy’s character, Celine:

If there’s any kind of magic in this world, it must be in the attempt of understanding someone, sharing something… I know, it’s almost impossible to succeed, but who cares, really? The answer must be in the attempt…

That same magic, the wonder of two people reaching out and forging a connection, is what makes Before Sunrise so poignant and unforgettable to anyone who has ever been young and in love. The story ends at sunrise, when the two must go their separate ways, and those of us who have fallen in love with their romance can’t help but regret how fleeting their time was together. They leave each other a promise—to meet again in Vienna after six months—but the credits roll before we ever find out if they did. I almost cried as I watched them looking out the window as they moved away from each other on different trains, knowing that they were leaving behind a connection that happens only once in the life of a very, very fortunate person.

    • kritt11 Concerned- they'll keep doing it because it works. The GOP has actually increased the size of the federal government far more than the Democrats EVER did—so what principles are they running on? I guess they can point to blocking an increase in CAFE standards, opposing a raise in the minimum wage, , as well as vetoing S-CHIP.
